lantern dress project:
Inspired by the lanterns of NYC's Chinatown, my lantern skirt pays tribute to community spirit and symbolizes Chinese culture. It draws from the "Light Up Chinatown" initiative - a community-led effort to create a welcoming atmosphere for businesses impacted by COVID-19 through lantern displays.
This skirt serves multiple purposes: it can be worn in parades, function as a stylish garment, or illuminate a space like a lantern. Throughout my process, I envisioned this garment as one worn by a spirit, embodying the whimsical nature of the design.
The structure is inspired by the angular, geometric shapes of Chinese temple architecture, often mirrored in lantern designs. Its expandable and compressible form allows the skirt to transform into varied iterations, shifting its design with each adjustment.
