An object study of ginger roots, a key ingredient in Chinese herbal medicine.

Upon experimentation, I observed how the roots’ branch-like structure resembles the pipe systems I frequently encounter in New York’s infrastructure. Through a process of deconstruction and reconstruction, I cut sections of the roots and punctured them with needles, reattaching each branch to rotate like a doll joint until the entire root became a “healed” infrastructure of its own.

In my paintings, the ginger turns into patches of flesh, reminiscent of human figures standing and lying down – with joints once broken but made new – a contrast against the joints of the pipe’s cold, unnatural infrastructure.
